{"id":1111239,"date":"2019-04-16T15:56:41","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T15:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=982362"},"modified":"2019-04-16T15:56:41","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T15:56:41","slug":"hecla-minings-water-permit-for-montana-mine-revoked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1111239","title":{"rendered":"Hecla Mining\u2019s water permit for Montana mine revoked"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shares in silver producer Hecla Mining (NYSE:HL) fell on Tuesday after <a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/news\/press\/2019\/montana-court-strikes-down-water-use-permit-for-rock-creek-mine-protecting-wilderness-streams\"  rel=\"noopener\">it became public<\/a> that a judge in the United States of Montana overturned last week the water permit approval for the company\u2019s proposed Rock Creek mine.<\/p>\n<p>The licence would have allowed Hecla to pump groundwater to supply the proposed copper and silver mine in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness, an area of glaciated peaks and valleys that take their name from the area\u2019s box-like rock formations.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>Licence would have allowed Hecla to pump groundwater to supply the proposed copper and silver mine beneath a Montana wilderness area.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>Earthjustice, which filed suit over the permit on behalf of the Clark Fork Coalition, Rock Creek Alliance, Earthworks and the Montana Environmental Information Center, contend the company\u2019s own analysis shows such a major groundwater pumping effort would permanently dewater pristine streams in the area, rich with wildlife including grizzly bears and wolverines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court\u2019s ruling safeguards some of the purest waters in the lower 48 from the destructive impacts threatened by the Rock Creek mine,\u201d Earthjustice attorney Katherine O\u2019Brien, <a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/news\/press\/2019\/montana-court-strikes-down-water-use-permit-for-rock-creek-mine-protecting-wilderness-streams\"  rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Russell, vice president of external affairs for Hecla Mining, told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyinterlake.com\/local_news\/20190416\/judge_nixes_permit_for_rock_creek_mine_project\">Daily Inter Lake<\/a><\/em> the company was concerned the judge\u2019s decision could \u201cgreatly expand\u201d what the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation must consider when weighing whether to award a water-use permit.<\/p>\n<p>Montana officials said they would challenge the ruling, adding that it would not impact planned exploratory work at the mine site, located northeast of Noxon.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s stock was down 1.32% to $2.22 at 11:45 am E.T.<\/p>\n<p>The Coeur d\u2019Alene, Idaho-based\u00a0firm grabbed the Rock Creek in 2015 with the acquisition of Revett Mining Company. The project is located about 80 km north of the company\u2019s Lucky Friday mine in Idaho.<\/p>\n<p>Hecla is also pursuing development of another large silver and copper mine, Montanore, in northwest
