{"id":1107715,"date":"2019-03-27T14:32:25","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=978433"},"modified":"2019-03-27T14:32:25","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:32:25","slug":"u-n-ethical-investors-join-miners-quest-for-global-tailings-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1107715","title":{"rendered":"U.N., ethical investors join miners quest for global tailings rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), a London-based industry group representing 27 major companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmm.com\/en-gb\/news\/2019\/tailings-review\"  rel=\"noopener\">said Wednesday<\/a> it was working with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and ethical investors to come up with global standards for tailings dams.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is in response to the recent tragedy at Vale\u2019s Corrego do Feij\u00e3o mine in Brazil, where a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/tragic-deja-vu-vales-dam-break-leaves-dozens-of-brazilians-under-mud\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">tailings collapsed in January<\/a>, killing\u00a0about 300 people.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>ICMM is working with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) group on global standards for tailings dams.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>Other than UNEP, ICMM is also working with the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), a group that brings together ethical investors overseeing around $80 trillion worth of investments.<\/p>\n<p>Currently there are no established global standards defining what a tailings dam is, how to build one and how to care for it after it is decommissioned.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 3,500 tailings dams around the world. Unlike the ones used to build reservoirs or hydroelectric projects, tailings dams are not usually made from reinforced concrete or stone. They are mostly constructed from the waste material left over from mining operations, which \u2014 depending on the type of mine \u2014 can be toxic.<\/p>\n<p>Only three countries in the world ban upstream dams \u2014 Chile, Peru, and now Brazil. Chile, the world\u2019s No.1 copper producer, also regulates the minimum distance between dams and urban centres. But the nation still has 740 tailings deposits, only 101 of which are active, with the rest abandoned or inactive, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biblioteca.sernageomin.cl\/opac\/index.asp?param=o%AD%85zit%AD%99%91S%CD%9E%8C%8Co%8A%8Dw%9A~%98%A7&amp;Op=4\"  rel=\"noopener\">data from mining agency Sernageomin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ICMM, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/brazils-deadly-dam-collapse-pushes-miners-set-global-rules-tailings\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">announced its intention<\/a> to work
