{"id":1106158,"date":"2019-03-19T14:02:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T14:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=977065"},"modified":"2019-03-19T14:02:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T14:02:41","slug":"taxes-and-royalties-paid-by-mining-companies-in-australia-equivalent-of-federal-government-spending-on-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1106158","title":{"rendered":"Taxes and royalties paid by mining companies in Australia equivalent of Federal Government spending on education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/minerals.org.au\/sites\/default\/files\/190319%20DAE%20-%20MCA%20-%202017-18%20Royalties%20and%20Co%20Tax%20Estimates%20Final%20.pdf\"  rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> published by Deloitte Access Economics reveals that Australian mining companies paid A$30.6 billion in company tax and royalties in 2017-18 \u2013 the equivalent of all Federal Government spending on Australian schools, universities and vocational training.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the dollar amount paid in company taxes in the past couple of years surpasses that of 2011-12, which was the peak of the resources boom. That amount adds up to A$18.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-977073\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-19-at-6.53.51-AM-300x222.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-19-at-6.53.51-AM-300x222.png 300w, http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-19-at-6.53.51-AM-768x570.png 768w, http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-19-at-6.53.51-AM-1024x759.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-19-at-6.53.51-AM.png 1184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The document, which was commissioned by the Minerals Council of Australia, also states that mining companies paid A$12 billion in royalties to State Governments in 2017-18 \u2013 more than three times the amount paid a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese figures show the benefits delivered to taxpayers by the nation\u2019s largest export earner through billions of dollars paid to governments each year in taxes and royalties,\u201d said Tania Constable, Chief Executive Officer of the industry group, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/minerals.org.au\/news\/australian-mining-delivers-record-tax-and-royalty-payments-benefit-communities-and-families\"  rel=\"noopener\">media statement<\/a>. \u201cYet there could be even more benefits delivered to the community if our politicians deliver reforms \u2013 in particular, an internationally-competitive tax rate \u2013 so Australia can secure investment in the mines of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Constable\u2019s view, Federal and State governments need to ensure consistent policies that encourage investment and productivity in the resources sector. She said this would guarantee mining continues to deliver highly-paid, highly-skilled jobs in different areas of the country, especially in remote ones.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\"
