{"id":1101250,"date":"2019-02-21T14:09:13","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T14:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=972644"},"modified":"2019-02-21T14:09:13","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T14:09:13","slug":"brazil-mining-authority-halts-two-vale-complexes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1101250","title":{"rendered":"Brazil mining authority halts two Vale complexes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brazil&#8217;s mining agency (ANM) has ordered Vale (NYSE:VALE) to <a href=\"http:\/\/saladeimprensa.vale.com\/en\/Paginas\/Articles.aspx?r=Vale_on_Southern_System_operations&amp;s=Mining&amp;rID=1193&amp;sID=6\"  rel=\"noopener\">suspend operations<\/a> at its Fabrica and Vargem Grande complexes, as part of an ongoing crack down following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/tragic-deja-vu-vales-dam-break-leaves-dozens-of-brazilians-under-mud\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">last month&#8217;s deadly dam break<\/a> at the iron producer\u2019s Corrego do Feij\u00e3o mine.<\/p>\n<p>The Rio de Janeiro-based company said the ANM\u2019s decision was made in light of a possible failure of five dams at both complexes, which are located in Minas Gerais, the same state where the Feij\u00e3o mine dam collapse last month killed over 300 people.<\/p>\n<p>Since last month dam collapse, the second such accident involving Vale in about three years, both authorities and companies have stepped up scrutiny of so-called upstream dams, the cheapest but generally regarded as the riskiest method to storage mine waste.<\/p>\n<p>While Vale said it was abiding by the regulator&#8217;s decision, it has asked the agency for permission to dismantle the dams, while continuing some operations to limit impacts on production.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/saladeimprensa.vale.com\/en\/Paginas\/Articles.aspx?r=Vale_settles_agreement_to_anticipate_payment_of_indemnities&amp;s=Mining&amp;rID=1194&amp;sID=6\"  rel=\"noopener\">separate statement<\/a>, Vale said it would pay adult residents in Brumadinho, the Brazilian town affected by the Feij\u00e3o dam collapse, a total of 12,000 reais ($3,227.02) as compensation for the damage. The sum is roughly equivalent to 12 monthly minimum wages in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s biggest iron ore miner also committed to pay half that amount for every teenager and 25% for every child, but didn\u2019t \u00a0specify when those payments would begin.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week Brazil\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/bhp-urges-miners-create-global-body-oversee-tailings-dams\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">banned new upstream mining dams<\/a>\u00a0and ordered the decommissioning of upstream
