{"id":1101038,"date":"2019-02-20T21:03:33","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T21:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=972180"},"modified":"2019-02-20T21:03:33","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T21:03:33","slug":"mining-stocks-rally-as-copper-price-hits-7-month-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1101038","title":{"rendered":"Mining stocks rally as copper price hits 7-month high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, hopes that an escalation of the trade war between the US and China can been avoided (or at least postponed) sparked a massive rally in mining stocks \u2013 already buoyed by climbing metals prices.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump said yesterday he may not increase tariffs on Chinese products on March 1, as talks about the trading relationship between the world&#8217;s two largest economies continue in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The US imposed an import duty of 10% on $200B worth of Chinese goods in September. The rate was scheduled to rise to 25% at the beginning of the year before being postponed.<\/p>\n<p>Gold reached a fresh 10-month high just shy of $1,350 an ounce, iron ore&#8217;s rally was sustained at $88 a tonne and copper finally broke out of its recent trading range to exchange hands at $2.92 a pound, or $6,445 a tonne.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-972326\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/copper-gold-feb-20-2019.jpg\" alt=\"Mining stocks rally as copper price hits 7-month high\" width=\"561\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/copper-gold-feb-20-2019.jpg 561w, http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/copper-gold-feb-20-2019-295x300.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Investors piled into the sector\u2019s big names at the open, but enthusiasm waned in afternoon trading. Glencore got the ball rolling with strong financials for 2018 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/glencore-plans-new-buyback-trading-profit-disappoints\/\">a $2 billion share buyback program<\/a>. Sector watchers are also anticipating bumper profits when BHP, Rio Tinto and Anglo American report in the next fortnight.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>Sector watchers are also anticipating bumper profits when BHP, Rio Tinto and Anglo American report in the next fortnight<\/q><\/p>\n<p>Swiss-based Glencore added 2.6% in over-the-counter trading in the US while BHP added 2%\u00a0\u2014 lifting the market valuation of world\u2019s largest mining company by revenue to $140B in New York and bringing it within shouting distance of a one year high.<\/p>\n<p>Number one and two iron ore miners Vale and Rio Tinto\u2019s gains were more modest on the day, but Rio is now nearly 16% up since the start of the year. Vale, still reeling from the fallout of a deadly disaster at one of its iron ore operations in Brazil, has retreated 17% over the last four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Among large diversified mining companies, Anglo American was the best performer, jumping 2.3% after palladium futures settled at fresh record highs and hopes build for a turnaround at its iron ore unit Kumba in South Africa. London-listed Anglo American is trading just shy of a year high, as is its PGM unit, Angloplat.<\/p>\n<p>Top nickel and palladium producer Norilsk added 4%, lifting the company\u2019s market value to above $34B, also a near one-year high. Number one listed copper producer Freeport McMoRan continued its strong run adding another 2.9% on Wednesday. Shares in the Phoenix-based firm are up 10% over the past week, despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/grasberg-hasnt-received-new-copper-export-permit\">troubles at its Indonesian unit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Post merger Barrick Gold was up 1.7% while the number two gold mining company behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/barrick-golds-new-ceo-dismisses-canada-hq-debate-hysteria\/\">the British Columbia-incorporated giant<\/a>, Newmont added 2.7%, while Newmont&#8217;s merger
