Vale employees arrested in Brazil as part of dam collapse probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eight employees of the Brazilian mining giant Vale (NYSE:VALE) were arrested on Friday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/tragic-deja-vu-vales-dam-break-leaves-dozens-of-brazilians-under-mud\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">deadly dam disaster in the town of Brumadinho,<\/a> which killed at least 166 with over a hundred still missing.<\/p>\n<p>Four people from the German consulting group T\u00fcv S\u00fcd, company that certified the safety of Vale\u2019s dams, were also detained.<\/p>\n<p>All of the Vale employees arrested, which included two executives, were responsible for the security and stability of the Brumadinho dam and will remain in prison for 30 days, <a href=\"http:\/\/g1.globo.com\/globo-news\/videos\/v\/policia-prende-oito-funcionarios-da-vale-em-operacao\/7384101\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>GloboNews<\/em> TV channel reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the\u00a0arrest of five people last month, including three employees and two other engineers working on behalf of the company, deepening a crisis for the company after another deadly disaster at one of its mines.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian police were also carrying out 14 search warrants to seize documents and other potentially useful material as part of the probe.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, an internal report quoted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.folha.uol.com.br\/cotidiano\/2019\/02\/vale-previu-inundacao-de-refeitorio-e-sede-de-barragem-e-desprezou-o-risco.shtml\"  rel=\"noopener\">by Brazilian paper\u00a0<em>Folha de S.Paulo<\/em><\/a> showed Vale knew the dam was at risk\u00a0as it was told the site breached guidelines months before it collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Vale, which is the world&#8217;s top iron ore miner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/vale-says-alarms-didnt-go-off-time-brumadinho-due-speed-sludge\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">said the report was misleading<\/a> as there was no evidence of imminent risk.<\/p>\n<p>The collapse of the Feij\u00e3o dam is the second major mining disaster in in the state of Minas Gerais since 2015, when a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/bhp-vales-samarco-reach-final-settlement-brazil-dam-failure\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">tailings storage facility burst at Samarco<\/a> \u2014 a joint venture between Vale
