{"id":1099178,"date":"2019-02-11T14:00:50","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T14:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=969441"},"modified":"2019-02-11T14:00:50","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T14:00:50","slug":"peruvian-authorities-looking-into-possible-tailings-dam-spill-at-southern-coppers-cuajone-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1099178","title":{"rendered":"Peruvian authorities looking into possible tailings dam spill at Southern Copper\u2019s Cuajone mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peru&#8217;s environmental agency OEFA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oefa.gob.pe\/noticias-institucionales\/oefa-supervisa-discurrimiento-de-solucion-verdosa-al-rio-torata-de-la-unidad-minera-de-southern-copper-corporation-en-moquegua\"  rel=\"noopener\">is investigating what looks like a tailings spill<\/a> from Southern Copper\u2019s Cuajone mine into a river in an area that has been inundated by heavy rains.<\/p>\n<p>The authority detected a &#8220;flow of a greenish solution&#8221; into the nearby Torata River in the waste deposit area of the operation, located in the Moquegua region approximately 860 km (535 miles) southeast of Lima, the capital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to a preliminary report presented by the company, the environmental emergency occurred due to extreme rainfall throughout the southern zone of the country and, as a result, they activated the contingency plan of the mining unit,&#8221; it said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oefa.gob.pe\/noticias-institucionales\/oefa-supervisa-discurrimiento-de-solucion-verdosa-al-rio-torata-de-la-unidad-minera-de-southern-copper-corporation-en-moquegua\"  rel=\"noopener\">the statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>The country&#8217;s Agency of Evaluation and Environmental Enforcement (OEFA) said the spill occurred in the waste deposit area of the copper mine.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>The spilled occurred on Friday and it had stopped by Sunday, OEFA noted.<\/p>\n<p>Southern Copper, a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, said it had shut down the processing plant at Cuajone as a preventative measure on Friday, adding that\u00a0is searching for a worker who was swept away by a mudslide, but denied there may have been any tailings spill.<\/p>\n<p>The company is the world&#8217;s fifth largest copper miner in terms of output, and Peru is the second-largest producing country. This means that any disruptions at the company\u2019s mines, the country\u2019s or both could tighten global supply, especially as\u00a0neighbouring Chile, the world&#8217;s No. 1 producer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/least-three-chilean-copper-mines-halted-due-heavy-rain\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">has also suspended some copper operations<\/a> due to unusual rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>Mining is a key industry in Peru, which is also the world\u2019s second largest silver producer, and the sixth when it comes to gold.
