Canada\u2019s Trilogy Metals (TSX, NYSE:\u00a0TMQ) is upping exploration\u00a0budget for its projects in Northwest Alaska<\/a>, after its partner Australia\u2019s\u00a0South32\u00a0(ASX, LON:S32) agreed to equally fund a\u00a0program along the Ambler volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) belt.<\/p>\n

Each company will contribute an additional $1 million for\u00a0exploration at the Upper Kobuk Mineral\u00a0Projects (UKMP), in addition to the $18.2-million budget set for 2019.<\/p>\n

The additional $2 million will be used for regional or district\u00a0exploration\u00a0focusing on identifying and\u00a0testing\u00a0new drill targets in Alaska\u2019s Ambler\u00a0mining\u00a0belt.<\/p>\n

Each company will contribute an additional $1 million for exploration at the Upper Kobuk mineral projects, located along Alaska’s Ambler VMS belt.<\/q><\/p>\n

The program will include a VTEM airborne geophysical survey along the entire belt, said Trilogy chief executive and exploration geologist\u00a0Rick van Nieuwenhuyse.<\/p>\n

The timing of the partners seems to be just right as the US Bureau of Land Management is expected to take long strides this year toward finalizing an Environmental Impact Statement for the Ambler Mining District Industrial Access Road. That\u2019s a proposed 211-mile (440-km) transportation corridor that will connect the metals-rich region to Alaska’s highway system and world markets.<\/p>\n

Trilogy’s ability to steadily advance the Arctic and Bornite projects, the two most advanced of the\u00a0UKMP, has been supported by\u00a0South32’s robust investment over the past two seasons.<\/p>\n

Under an agreement signed in 2017<\/a>,\u00a0the Australian major has the option to buy a 50% interest in UKMP for $150 million. South32 can exercise such option at any time between now and the end of next January.<\/p>\n

The $1-million funding from\u00a0South32\u00a0is in addition to the $30 million in option payments the miner has already contributed to maintain the option of creating a 50:50 joint venture with Trilogy on the UKMP.<\/p>\n
