{"id":1096977,"date":"2019-01-30T11:08:13","date_gmt":"2019-01-30T11:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=966447"},"modified":"2019-01-30T11:08:13","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T11:08:13","slug":"fortune-minerals-commits-to-hire-locally-at-canadas-first-primary-cobalt-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1096977","title":{"rendered":"Fortune Minerals commits to hire locally at Canada\u2019s first primary cobalt mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fortune Minerals (TSX: FT) (OTCQX: FTMDF), the company behind what could become Canada\u2019s first primary cobalt mine, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortuneminerals.com\/news\/press-releases\/press-release-details\/2019\/Fortune-Announces-Socio-Economic-Agreement-Completed-with-the-Government-of-the-Northwest-Territories\/default.aspx\"  rel=\"noopener\">signed a socio-economic agreement<\/a> with the government of the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.) in which it commits to hire and spend locally.<\/p>\n<p>The 48-page document sets out targets for jobs, spending, education, and training in the Territories as the\u00a0NICO cobalt, bismuth, gold, and copper project moves ahead.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agreement, Fortune Minerals &#8220;shall use best efforts&#8221; to ensure 60% of the mine&#8217;s workforce during operations are N.W.T. residents, with at least half of them being Indigenous. During construction, at least 35% of workers should be N.W.T. residents. Half of those should be Indigenous.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>Fortune expects to begin construction this year, with commercial production starting in the early 2020s.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>Preference will be given to Tlicho, Yellowknives Dene and North Slave Metis Alliance members, Fortune Minerals said.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fifth socio-economic agreement currently active in the N.W.T. The others are with the Ekati, Diavik, Gahcho Ku\u00e9, and Snap Lake mines.<\/p>\n<p>The expected opening of NICO is one of the main reasons\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/tlicho-season-road-near-nico-project-approved\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Tlicho all-season road<\/a> to the community of Whati\u00a0from Highway 3 is being built.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Fortune anticipated construction of the mine would begin in 2019 and last for two years, allowing commercial production in the early 2020s. Concentrate will be shipped to a refinery the company plans to construct in Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n<p>The Whati-based mine has a forecast productive life of around two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Fortune also owns the Sue-Dianne copper-silver-gold deposit located 25 km north of the NICO project, which is a potential future source of incremental mill feed to extend the life of NICO\u2019s mill.<\/p>\n<p>The post
