{"id":1096149,"date":"2019-01-24T21:50:54","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T21:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=965339"},"modified":"2019-01-24T21:50:54","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T21:50:54","slug":"flashback-gold-price-fat-finger-56-tonnes-gone-in-60-seconds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1096149","title":{"rendered":"FLASHBACK: Gold price fat finger \u2013 56 tonnes gone in 60 seconds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shares in Jardine Matheson Holdings, a 186-year old firm listed in Singapore, plummeted 83% on Thursday, wiping more than $40 billion off the market value of the storied conglomerate.<\/p>\n<p>The stock quickly recovered and traders immediately pointed to the most likely reason for the strange dealings \u2013 a fat finger.<\/p>\n<p>Fat finger trades are human errors \u2013 more often than not pressing the wrong buttons SGX later on Thursday said fat fingers or a technical glitch were not to blame and that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-jardine-matheson-stocks\/jardine-mathesons-41-billion-tumble-no-fat-finger-error-says-singapore-bourse-idUSKCN1PI0WD\"  rel=\"noopener\">trades were orderly<\/a>\u00a0(albeit baffling).<\/p>\n<p>In June 2017, the Comex gold market in New York also fell victim to a fat finger that saw a trade executed at some 100 times usual size resulting in a 1.6% drop in the price (the metal also recovered later in the day).<\/p>\n<p>This was MINING.com&#8217;s report at the time:<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>The gold market absorbed a massive $2.2B in gold sales in less than a minute and during a period of illiquidity<\/q><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_888560\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-888560\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/cme-jun-26-2017-drop-fat-finger-gold-price-muppet-.jpg\" alt=\"Muppet drops gold price to 6-week low\" width=\"550\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/cme-jun-26-2017-drop-fat-finger-gold-price-muppet-.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/cme-jun-26-2017-drop-fat-finger-gold-price-muppet--297x300.jpg 297w, http:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/cme-jun-26-2017-drop-fat-finger-gold-price-muppet--250x253.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: CME Group<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ross Norman, CEO of gold trader Sharps Pixley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharpspixley.com\/articles\/gold-sees-a-56-tonne-sale-in-60-seconds_268970.html\">ascribes the sharp decline<\/a> to a 60 second 56 tonne (1.8m ounces) trade executed at 9am in London:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This bears the hallmarks of a fat finger &#8216;muppet&#8217; &#8211; a trade of 18,149\u00a0<em>ounces <\/em>would be a very typical trade, but a trade of 18,149 <em>lots<\/em> of a futures contract (which is 100 times bigger) would not be&#8230; it leaves us wondering if a junior had got confused between &#8220;ounces&#8221; and &#8220;lots&#8221;&#8230; or maybe an incorrectly programmed algo ahead of options expiry on COMEX &#8230; we just don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Norman points out that if the trade, which may also have been carried out by a central bank or a large-scale speculator opening a short position, was indeed an error, the gold price bear who made the move is nursing a $36 million loss at this point:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The big take-away though from all this is that the gold market absorbed a massive $2.2 billion in gold sales in less than a minute and during a period of illiquidity &#8230;
