{"id":1095228,"date":"2019-01-20T18:35:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-20T18:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=964391"},"modified":"2019-01-20T18:35:26","modified_gmt":"2019-01-20T18:35:26","slug":"combayo-residents-to-protest-against-minera-yanacocha-in-northern-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1095228","title":{"rendered":"Combayo residents to protest against Minera Yanacocha in northern Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents of the Combayo community, located in the Cajamarca department of northern Peru, announced a protest for February 6, 2019, against Minera Yanacocha, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/industry_ext_content\/ifc_external_corporate_site\/ogm+home\/priorities\/mining\/yanacocha-gold-mine_english\" rel=\"noopener\" >owned<\/a> by Colorado\u2019s Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM), Peru\u2019s Buenaventura, and the World Bank&#8217;s International Finance Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/larepublica.pe\/sociedad\/1396806-cajamarca-comunidad-combayo-advierte-protestas-mineria\" rel=\"noopener\" >local media<\/a>, people are blaming the miner for polluting the Mashc\u00f3n river and its tributaries, thus causing severe water shortages in the area.<\/p>\n<p>They also said that the company, which has been operating there for 25 years, has created more poverty and economic disparities.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2005, the town of Combayo has been <a href=\"https:\/\/goldmine.wordpress.com\/2006\/08\/04\/enfrentamientos-por-yanacocha-un-muerto-mining-causes-violent-confrontation-un-dead\/\" rel=\"noopener\" >opposing<\/a> Yanacocha&#8217;s Carachugo II expansion project and the construction of El Azufre dam, and this new protest is seen as a continuity of their longstanding opposition.<\/p>\n<p>This, despite the fact that in November 2005 authorities, officers from the Ministry of Energy, Combayo residents, and Yanacocha signed an agreement to work jointly to monitor air and water quality in the area and to guarantee a steady water supply. Yanacocha <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yanacocha.com\/reservorios-para-75-familias-de-combayo-agua-todo-el-ano\/\" rel=\"noopener\" >has said<\/a> it fulfilled its commitment by building three water
