{"id":1093568,"date":"2019-01-10T11:02:39","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T11:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=962833"},"modified":"2019-01-10T11:02:39","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T11:02:39","slug":"acacia-mining-fined-over-alleged-environmental-breach-in-tanzania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1093568","title":{"rendered":"Acacia Mining fined over alleged environmental breach in Tanzania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Acacia Mining (LON:ACA), the Tanzanian gold producer dealing with an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/no-end-sight-acacia-mining-tax-row-tanzanias-govt\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">ongoing dispute with the country\u2019s administration<\/a>,\u00a0received Thursday a fresh blow from the country\u2019s government, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acaciamining.com\/media\/press-releases\/2019\/2019-01-10.aspx\"  rel=\"noopener\">fined the miner 300 million Tanzanian shillings<\/a> (about $129,144) over allegations of breaching environmental rules by its North Mara operation.<\/p>\n<p>The company noted it has not yet received any supporting reports, findings or testing data in relation to alleged discharges of a hazardous substance\u00a0at the mine site, adding it\u2019s currently assessing the technical basis of such claims.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>Acacia said it has not yet received any supporting reports, findings or testing data in relation to the alleged discharge of a hazardous substance\u00a0at its North Mara mine.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>Tanzania&#8217;s\u00a0No.1 gold producer also said the alleged environmental violations could relate to a long-standing seepage at the base of the tailings storage facility at North Mara, an issue apparently &#8220;well-known&#8221; by both the National Environment Management Council\u00a0(NEMC) and the Tanzanian government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This seepage remains managed by pumps which return the water to the tailings storage facility and it is, therefore, contained on the mine site, does not flow into the surrounding environment or present a risk of contamination to any public water source,&#8221; it said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Acacia did acknowledge local media reports pointing at the Tanzanian government ordering a new tailings storage facility at North Mara, but said it was only a verbal directive.<\/p>\n<p>The gold producer added that, before the order, it had already detected the need for additional tailings management and storage capacity to meet North Mara\u2019s life of mine plans. However, it believes a new facility would be more economic than expanding the current infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Read also:\u00a0<a new mining minister, Dotto Biteko, the third one to take on the role since President John Magufuli was elected in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Acacia, majority owned by Barrick Gold (TSX:ABX)(NYSE:GOLD), has been waiting for the Canadian gold giant to negotiate a settlement with Magufuli, after he forced it to stop exports of concentrate in early 2017.<\/p>\n<p>That year, the country\u2019s government banned exports of unprocessed metal and slapped the miner with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/acacia-mining-now-hit-190-billion-tax-bill-tanzania\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">a $190 billion tax bill<\/a>\u2014 equal to almost two centuries worth of revenue.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Acacia was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/tanzania-anti-corruption-body-arrests-acacia-mining-employees\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">hit with fresh charges of money laundering and corruption<\/a>\u00a0and some of its
