{"id":1090908,"date":"2018-12-19T18:16:15","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T18:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=959996"},"modified":"2018-12-19T18:16:15","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T18:16:15","slug":"gem-diamonds-finds-14-stones-over-100cts-reaches-record-high-in-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1090908","title":{"rendered":"Gem Diamonds finds 14 stones over 100cts, reaches record high in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a great year for Africa-focused\u00a0Gem Diamonds (LON:GEMD), which recovered a record number of huge precious stones from its flagship\u00a0Let\u0161eng mine in Lesotho.<\/p>\n<p>With the two latest, a high quality 101 carat and 71 carat white Type IIa diamond, both recovered within a 24-hour period, the number of stones over 100 carats dug up at the mine reached 14, the company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gemdiamonds.com\/news-article.php?articleID=7646\"  rel=\"noopener\">said Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>Let\u0161eng is the world\u2019s highest dollar per carat diamond mine.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>Early in the year, it found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/fifth-largest-gem-quality-diamond-history-sold-40-million\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">the 910-carat \u201cLesotho Legend\u201d<\/a>, one of the largest diamonds ever discovered, which it sold for $40 million.<\/p>\n<p>Other big finds were a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/gem-diamonds-finds-ninth-big-diamond-letseng\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">115-carat diamond found in May<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/gem-diamonds-big-discoveries-reach-dozen\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">138-carat one unveiled in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since acquiring Let\u0161eng in 2006, Gem Diamonds has found now five of the 20 largest white gem quality diamonds ever recovered, which makes the mine the world\u2019s highest dollar per carat kimberlite diamond operation.<\/p>\n<p>At an average elevation of 3,100 metres (10,000 feet) above sea level, Let\u0161eng is also one of the world\u2019s highest diamond mines.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest diamond ever found was the 3,106-carat Cullinan, dug near Pretoria, South Africa, in 1905. It was later\u00a0cut into several stones, including the First Star of Africa and the Second Star of Africa, which are part of Britain&#8217;s Crown Jewels held in the Tower of London.<\/p>\n<p>Lucara\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/despite-the-hype-worlds-second-largest-diamond-ever-found-fails-to-sell\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona<\/a>\u00a0was the second-biggest in record, while the 995-carat Excelsior and 969-carat Star of Sierra Leone were the third- and fourth-largest.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\"
