Caterpillar\u00a0(NYSE: CAT), the world’s no.1 heavy machinery maker, is giving chief executive officer Jim Umpleby the additional responsibility of becoming the company\u2019s chairman<\/a>, effective immediately.<\/p>\n

Umpleby has been a member of the board and CEO since Jan. 1, 2017.<\/p>\n

Dave Calhoun, who has served as non-executive chairman since April 1, 2017, will remain on the Board as Presiding Director, the company said.<\/p>\n

Caterpillar is also stepping up efforts to provide additional autonomous\u00a0 offerings,\u00a0 with\u00a0 the \u00a0goal\u00a0 of\u00a0 making\u00a0 its\u00a0 entire\u00a0 large\u00a0 mining\u00a0 truck\u00a0 class\u00a0 autonomy-ready.\u00a0 That\u00a0 includes\u00a0 the\u00a0 newly-added\u00a0 electric\u00a0 drive\u00a0 796\u00a0 AC\u00a0 and\u00a0 798\u00a0 AC\u00a0 haul\u00a0 trucks.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0 noted\u00a0 that\u00a0 an\u00a0 eighth\u00a0 fleet will\u00a0 come\u00a0 online\u00a0 next\u00a0 year\u00a0 at\u00a0 Fortescue\u00a0 Metal\u00a0 Group\u2019s\u00a0 Cloudbreak\u00a0 iron\u00a0 ore\u00a0 mine\u00a0 in\u00a0 Western\u00a0 Australia.<\/p>\n

And \u00a0while\u00a0 the\u00a0 mining\u00a0 sector\u00a0 has\u00a0 still\u00a0 ways\u00a0 to\u00a0 go\u00a0 in\u00a0 terms\u00a0 of\u00a0 buying\u00a0 new\u00a0 machinery\u00a0 as\u00a0 opposed\u00a0 to\u00a0 only\u00a0 upgrading\u00a0 current\u00a0 fleets,\u00a0 Sudhanshu\u00a0 Singh\u00a0 said\u00a0 most\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 sales\u00a0 growth is\u00a0 coming\u00a0 from\u00a0 the\u00a0 copper\u00a0 and\u00a0 iron\u00a0 ore\u00a0 sectors,\u00a0 and\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 increasingly\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 from\u00a0 coal\u00a0 producers,\u00a0 given\u00a0 the\u00a0 increasing\u00a0 number\u00a0 of\u00a0 expansion\u00a0 projects\u00a0 and\u00a0 new\u00a0 greenfield\u00a0 developments.<\/p>\n
