{"id":1054855,"date":"2018-09-30T19:55:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-30T19:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1054855"},"modified":"2018-09-30T19:55:31","modified_gmt":"2018-09-30T19:55:31","slug":"pink-diamond-breaks-world-record-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1054855","title":{"rendered":"Pink diamond breaks world record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/pink-diamond-breaks-world-record\/\">Valentina Ruiz Leotaud<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>A fancy pink diamond weighing 5.03 carats <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bonhams.com\/press_release\/26579\/\" rel=\"noopener\">sold<\/a> this week for more than $2.9 million, setting a new auction world record of $583,551 per carat for a diamond of its kind. <\/p>\n<p>The rock was auctioned at a sale organized by Bonhams London Fine Jeweller, which beat Sotheby&#8217;s Geneva previous record of $528,021 per carat for a fancy pink.<\/p>\n<p>According to Emily Barber, Director of Jewellery at Bonhams UK, the stone&#8217;s features explain why it sold at such a high price. \u201cThis was due to a number of factors: its size \u2013 it&#8217;s exceptionally rare to see a pink over five carats on the market today; its even colour saturation and its extraordinarily elegant cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Barber&#8217;s view, with Western Australia&#8217;s Argyle mine forecast to cease operations by 2020 after 50 years of activity, the future of pink diamond mining is uncertain because there are no other known deposits with such a consistent production. Thus, she says the gems have started to increase in value. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are highly desirable to discerning collectors given their rarity and limited supply.
