{"id":1021798,"date":"2018-09-18T23:45:17","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T23:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1021798"},"modified":"2018-09-18T23:45:17","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T23:45:17","slug":"top-zimbabwe-miner-may-pay-suppliers-in-gold-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1021798","title":{"rendered":"Top Zimbabwe Miner May Pay Suppliers in Gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investingnews.com\/daily\/resource-investing\/precious-metals-investing\/gold-investing\/top-zimbabwe-miner-pay-suppliers-gold\/\">Nicole Rashotte<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investingnews.com\/daily\/resource-investing\/precious-metals-investing\/gold-investing\/top-zimbabwe-miner-pay-suppliers-gold\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.investingnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gold-Outlook-3D-1-Small-2-2.jpeg\" alt=\"gold outlook free report\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>Metallon <\/b><b>has evaluated Zimbabwe&#8217;s current economic climate and has begun looking at paying its mining equipment suppliers in gold. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Zimbabwe abandoned its currency in 2009 because of hyperinflation, and now faces a cash shortage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Metallon, the country&#8217;s largest gold miner, requires US<\/span><span>$400 million to buy new machinery and upgrade existing equipment as it moves to increase its production.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/investingnews.com\/free-report-online\/gold-stocks-and-investment-report\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/investingnews.com\/free-report-online\/gold-stocks-and-investment-report\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>10+ Gold Stocks to Watch<\/h2>\n<h4>Stocks.<br \/>\nExpert Insights.<br \/>\nIndustry Stats.<br \/><\/h4>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/investingnews.com\/free-report-online\/gold-stocks-and-investment-report\/\"> Give me my free report! <\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- end large-8 -->\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- end row --><\/div>\n<p>CEO Mzi Khumalo <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-09-18\/metallon-may-pay-suppliers-in-gold-amid-zimbabwe-cash-shortage?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=bd&amp;cmpId=google\">said on Tuesday<\/a> (September 18) that the move would allow the company to sidestep the country&#8217;s cash quandary and continue with plans to expand.<\/p>\n<p><span>The miner has begun talks with equipment suppliers in South Africa and Canada, among other countries, to discuss using gold as payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe can then enter agreements with banks, various financiers on the basis of gold-backed transactions,\u201d Khumalo stated. <\/span><span>He added, \u201c[suppliers] will get their payment in gold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company is proposing this idea because <\/span><span>Zimbabwean law enables Metallon to convert leases on claims around its four mines into special mining leases that can then be used to secure financing for equipment purchases. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite this law, gold is not considered legal tender in Zimbabwe \u2014 if this transaction were to come to fruition, it would be the first of its kind for the African country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Khumalo stated that last week that he met with Mines Minister Winston Chitando who told him that he would support Metallon&#8217;s efforts to boost output. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Similarly, President Emmerson Mnangagwa<\/span> <span>has pledged to revive mining and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investingnews.com\/category\/daily\/resource-investing\/agriculture-investing\/\">agriculture<\/a> as part of a plan to achieve middle-income status within the next five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn the past we operated under a government that has been very hostile to business,\u201d he said. Mnangagwa added, \u201c[t]he amount of money that is going to be made in Zimbabwe in the next five to ten years, measured against other emerging markets, Zimbabwe will be number one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Metallon currently has four mines in Zimbabwe, one of which has suspended underground mining to allow for redevelopment.
