{"id":1017769,"date":"2018-09-15T20:21:04","date_gmt":"2018-09-15T20:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1017769"},"modified":"2018-09-15T20:21:04","modified_gmt":"2018-09-15T20:21:04","slug":"the-biggest-casualty-of-the-financial-crisis-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1017769","title":{"rendered":"The Biggest Casualty of the Financial Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/the-biggest-casualty-of-the-financial-crisis\/\">Brian Maher<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/the-biggest-casualty-of-the-financial-crisis\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/agorafinancialwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/drchart_08292018_not_much_bang_for_the_buck.png\" alt=\"Chart\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This post <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/the-biggest-casualty-of-the-financial-crisis\/\">The Biggest Casualty of the Financial Crisis<\/a> appeared first on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/dailyreckoning.com\/\">Daily Reckoning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today we acknowledge a grim anniversary\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Lehman Bros. shuttered its doors 10 years ago this very day\u2026 and the Great Financial Crisis was underway.<\/p>\n<p>A decade on, America is still shoveling its way out.<\/p>\n<p>The stock market has gone on a run for all time, it is true.<\/p>\n<p>But the Main Street economy appears to have acquired a permanent limp.<\/p>\n<p>Not one year has GDP grown at 3%\u2026 while recoveries from previous recessions routinely exceeded 3%.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, the national debt pre-crisis was roughly $9.5 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The government of the United States borrowed $11.6 trillion since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Today the national debt rises above $21 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>But the American economy expanded only $5.1 trillion these past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>That is, while GDP has increased 35% since 2008\u2026 the national debt has increased 122%.<\/p>\n<p>The Keynesian \u201cmultiplier\u201d has taken up division.<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cSovereign Man\u201d Simon Black notes\u2026 every borrowed dollar since 2008 has generated only 44 cents of economic output.<\/p>\n<p>We await the breathless explanation of Paul Krugman, arch-salesman of the Keynesian business model.<\/p>\n<p>We recently revealed the specific economic impact of post-2008 \u201cunconventional monetary policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This includes QEs 1 through 3, NIRP, ZIRP and three-quarters of the English alphabet.<\/p>\n<p>The combined results, as summarized by analyst Daniel Lacalle:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>In eight of the 12 cases analyzed, the impact on the economy was negative.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In three cases, it was completely neutral.\n<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It only worked in the case of the so-called QE1 in the U.S. and fundamentally because the starting base was very low and the U.S. became a major oil and gas producer.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For emphasis:<\/p>\n<p>In 11 of 12 instances\u2026 \u201cunconventional monetary policy\u201d proved either negative or insignificant.<\/p>\n<p>Again we turn to Torsten Slok, chief international economist at Deutsche Bank:<\/p>\n<p><em>The conclusion is that U.S. QE1 had an impact but in all other cases the impact of QE and negative interest rates has been insignificant. And in eight out of 12 cases, the economic impact has been negative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We re-submit the following graphic in indictment of central banks the world over:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Radical changes as those above get no hearing in normal times.<\/p>\n<p>But come the crisis, we are forced to guzzle whatever medicine is on tap \u2014 however bitter \u2014 side effects be damned.<\/p>\n<p>Was there a man outside the economics departments of ivied institutions who would mount a soapbox and yell for negative interest rates?<\/p>\n<p>Imagine\u2026 being charged to house your money in a bank.<\/p>\n<p>A fellow proposing it would have been packed off to a farm not nearly as funny as the word suggests.<\/p>\n<p>But Lehman fell.<\/p>\n<p>A few short years later whole swathes of the civilized world were toiling under negative interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>Many still are.<\/p>\n<p>Absent the great crisis, it would not have been.<\/p>\n<p>Nor would the rest of the financial witchcraft conjured into being these past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Come the next crisis\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Negative interest rates, the banning of cash, \u201chelicopter money,\u201d etc., we will likely be treated to the entire menu \u2014 and probably more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe modern world is insane,\u201d said G.K.
